Mr. Schopf is a founding partner of Schopf & Weiss. He has practiced law for more than 30 years and is nationally known for successfully trying complex business cases in state and federal courtrooms across the United States.
Partnering with colleague Steven A. Weiss, Mr. Schopf founded Schopf & Weiss in 1987 with a vision to establish an experienced team of attorneys focused exclusively on tackling clients' business litigation challenges. He is known for skillfully trying difficult cases for both defendants and plaintiffs, an expertise that has helped to earn Schopf & Weiss - now a team of 20 litigators - its reputation for winning even under the most challenging conditions.
In the past decade, Mr. Schopf has successfully led more than 11 major jury trials involving business and legal issues, such as international trade, dumping, civil RICO, legal malpractice, price-fixing, deceptive practices, breach of contract and fraud. In 2004, The National Law Journal named Mr. Schopf among its prestigious top "Winning Trial Lawyers" in the United States. He was also listed in the publication's "Top 100 Verdicts of 2003" for leading the team that won the first and only case tried under the Antidumping Act of 1916 (Goss International Corp. v. Tokyo Kikai Seisakusho, Ltd.).
Among Mr. Schopf's additional, recent successes are defending an industrial gas manufacturer in potentially billion-dollar, multidistrict litigation involving the liquid carbon dioxide industry (In re Carbon Dioxide Antitrust Litigation) resulting in a defense verdict, and winning a jury verdict for civil RICO on behalf of an individual suing one of Chicago's most successful real estate developers (Perlman v. Zell).
Prior to establishing Schopf & Weiss, Mr. Schopf honed his trial skills at the prestigious firms, Price, Cushman, Keck & Mahin (1973-1979), Reuben & Proctor (1979-1986) and Isham, Lincoln & Beale (1986-1987).
Mr. Schopf has authored and co-authored a number of legal publications, and frequently presents to business and legal audiences on topics ranging from discovery to weighing the risks and opportunities of pursuing litigation in the United States. Mr. Schopf is a member of the American Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association and the Union Internationale des Avocats, and is a regular presenter at the professional programs of these organizations. Mr. Schopf is a member of the Executive Committee of Schopf & Weiss.
Mr. Schopf received his J.D. from Cornell Law School in 1973, and received an A.B. Degree from Princeton University in 1970.
