Lesley Smith's practice is focused on complex business litigation. She litigates all aspects of cases from pleadings through trial and has successfully defended numerous trial court rulings on appeal.
Ms. Smith represents parties in a wide range of commercial disputes, including disputes involving contracts, securities, professional liability, and intellectual property. Recently, she second chaired a fraud and conspiracy trial that lasted three weeks and resulted in the jury returning a $5.2 million verdict, including punitive damages against all defendants - a complete victory for the client. She was lead counsel in a FINRA securities arbitration, successfully defending a broker-dealer in a dispute with a customer. Ms. Smith's experience includes representing corporations in auction-rate securities cases seeking damages and restitution of more than $100 million and representing some of the nation's largest law firms against claims of negligence and breach of fiduciary duty.
Ms. Smith is a member of the Illinois State Bar and is admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
Before joining Schopf & Weiss, Ms. Smith practiced at Kirkland & Ellis LLP. Ms. Smith received her J.D. summa cum laude from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in 2004, where she was elected Order of the Coif. She also served as an Associate Editor of The Ohio State Law Journal and was a member of the ABA Moot Court Team.
Ms. Smith received her Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from Washington University in St. Louis in 1998. Prior to attending law school, Ms. Smith worked as a systems manager for Proctor & Gamble.
